What it covers
The 2026–27 maximum scheduled Pell Grant is $7,395. Your school determines the actual award from your FAFSA information; eligible year-round enrollment may allow up to 150% of the scheduled award. This is not a guaranteed payment to every applicant.

Income / financial rules
No single household-income cutoff: family size, tax filing status and poverty guidelines matter. For 2026–27, SAI of $14,790 or higher generally bars Pell, with the stated Special Rule exception for certain deceased servicemember/public-safety-officer dependents. SAI is an index, not family income or your bill.

Who to check first
Usually for undergraduates with financial need who have not earned a bachelor’s, graduate or professional degree; there is no general adult-age limit. The FAFSA and school must establish the applicable federal-aid and programme eligibility.

Application timing
2026–27 FAFSA: federal receipt deadline June 30, 2027. Check earlier school/state dates and any separate verification or correction deadline. This date does not establish 2027–28 funding or a deadline for every grant.

How to apply

  1. 1
Check the school, state and federal deadlines for the actual year you will attend. The 2026–27 FAFSA federal filing deadline is June 30, 2027; school/state priority dates may be much earlier. Do not reuse this award amount or deadline as a confirmed 2027–28 award.

  2. 2
To apply online, create your own StudentAid.gov account. Gather the form’s required tax/income records, current assets, any child-support information and school list; a required contributor needs a separate account. Apply through the official FAFSA site—completion and submission are free.

  3. 3
Answer the student sections, identify the required contributors and invite them through the form. Provide consent/approval even if you did not file taxes, review answers and make sure all required sections and signatures are complete.

  4. 4
After processing, review your FAFSA Submission Summary for errors, missing actions and any verification request. Follow the listed corrections and your school’s document instructions; the estimated Pell amount is not the school’s final aid offer.

  5. 5
Compare the actual school aid offer with tuition, fees, books and living costs. If family finances have changed or someone lost a job, contact the financial aid office about the circumstances rather than assuming the original estimate is final.

What to watch for

The 2026–27 scheduled maximum is not your personal award or an automatic tuition waiver. Enrollment intensity changes the annual amount; lifetime Pell eligibility is limited to 12 semesters or the equivalent.

The FAFSA Submission Summary is an estimate, not an aid offer, and SAI is not the amount you must pay. Keep loans separate from grants when making a budget; completing a FAFSA does not require you to accept a federal loan.

A later federal filing date does not restore missed state/college priority funding. If you missed a date, ask the school what remains available; separate correction, verification and disbursement deadlines also apply.
