Free College Credit & Aid for High-School Students

First decide when you want to study: college credit before graduation and aid for a degree after graduation follow different routes. Start with the named example that fits that stage, then check your school, state and intended college.

Named starting points to compare

OH · LOCAL SCOPE

College Credit Plus at Columbus State

Eligible, approved CCP courses can earn high-school and college credit without tuition. Funded hours and course approval must be confirmed; home-school families pay for textbooks, and other course or travel costs can remain.

Condition to check first

The college describes the route for Ohio residents in grades 7–12. A non-Ohio or international tuition classification may require additional residency documents to decide whether CCP funding can cover the courses.

Application timing

Different steps have different deadlines. For 2026–27 nonpublic/home-school funding, the full-year window was February 1–April 1 at 5 p.m.; the state separately lists September 1–November 1 at 5 p.m. for spring 2027 only, with notification by December 6. Public-school intent is separately listed as April 1; a missed deadline needs school advice. College registration and no-penalty withdrawal dates depend on the course/term. This is not one universal application cutoff.
TN · LOCAL SCOPE

Tennessee Promise Scholarship

Supports eligible tuition and mandatory-fee balances after other gift aid. Confirm the applicable institution/programme and its actual award calculation.

Condition to check first

Follow the checklist for your graduation/enrollment cohort and attend a mandatory partner meeting.

Application timing

Class of 2027: submit the Tennessee Promise application by November 2, 2026. The 2027–28 FAFSA is separately due April 1, 2027.
FL · LOCAL SCOPE

Florida Academic Scholars (Bright Futures)

For 2026–27, FAS covers 100% of tuition and the listed applicable fees at Florida public institutions; private institutions receive a comparable scheduled amount, not necessarily their full bill.

Condition to check first

Be a Florida resident and U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen, as determined by the college. Complete the applicable Florida diploma/equivalent, home-education, GED or qualifying out-of-state-school route.

Application timing

For the 2027 high-school graduating cohort: FFAA from October 1, 2026 through August 31, 2027. Finish other initial conditions by graduation, with the handbook’s test-date exceptions. This initial deadline is not a renewal filing deadline.

Where to start

STEP 1

College credit before graduation

Use the Columbus State CCP example to prepare the school-counselor, college-admission and funding steps. Check which branch applies to your school setting; a college acceptance letter alone does not confirm funded courses.

STEP 2

A degree after high school

Tennessee Promise and Florida Bright Futures are separate state examples for post-graduation study. Start with the relevant state guide if you live elsewhere, and compare the award cycle, enrollment conditions and remaining costs.

STEP 3

Approve the course and its total cost

Ask the school and college to confirm funded hours, prerequisites, books, withdrawal dates and how credit would apply toward the intended degree. Keep that approval alongside the college registration.

Questions before you apply

Does college admission automatically pay for dual enrollment?

Check the named programme’s application steps. School approval, course registration and any state funding request can be separate decisions; the CCP example distinguishes public, nonpublic and home-school routes.

What if I missed an earlier CCP funding deadline?

Read the current state funding instructions and ask the counselor which term and school setting they cover. The reviewed CCP page retains the spring-only and full-year branches separately rather than giving every student one cutoff.

What should my family check before dropping a college course?

Look up the programme’s drop form, signatures, no-penalty deadline and possible repayment or transcript effects. Use the course’s actual academic calendar and ask the advisor before withdrawing.

Broader options to investigate

These editorial suggestions do not establish a special-status benefit. Compare the full program rules with your circumstances.
