Free learning, textbooks or college credit?

Start with the outcome you need: understand a subject, obtain a textbook, or earn credit that your chosen college accepts. These reviewed examples show what is provided, what needs a separate exam or school decision, and where to go next.

Choose a route by what it actually provides

Read the source-backed benefit and limit together. These examples serve different purposes; they are not interchangeable degree credits.

MIT OpenCourseWare learning materials

Free for everyone

What is provided

Study published MIT syllabi, notes and learning activities for free. Some courses include videos or open textbooks. OCW does not award a degree, academic credit or certification.
As of Oct 16, 2026 · MIT OpenCourseWare ↗

A limit to keep in your plan

Using these materials is not MIT admission or a credit-bearing OCW course. If you need a recognized credential, investigate a separate credential route before committing time.

Your next decision

For independent subject study: check the syllabus and available materials before choosing a course.

OpenStax free digital textbooks

Free for everyone

What is provided

Read OpenStax textbooks online or download their PDFs for free. Print editions are sold separately; a free digital textbook does not include every paid course tool.
As of Oct 16, 2026 · OpenStax, Rice University ↗

A limit to keep in your plan

This route supplies textbook materials. Confirm the exact assigned book and any separate paid homework requirement with your instructor; a free digital edition is not every course product.

Your next decision

For assigned reading: match the title and edition, then check any separate homework product.

Saylor ACE-recommended credit exams

Low cost

What is provided

Saylor charges no tuition or transcript fee for this route. The required proctoring service costs $5 per exam session. A passing credit exam earns an ACE recommendation for possible transfer, not automatic college credit.
As of Oct 16, 2026 · Saylor University ↗

A limit to keep in your plan

A course certificate is different from the proctored credit recommendation. Confirm degree applicability with the receiving institution; no particular number of accepted credits or graduation saving is promised.
As of Oct 16, 2026 · Saylor University ↗

Your next decision

For possible transfer credit: confirm the exact course with the receiving school before the credit exam.

Modern States · Freshman Year for Free

Free if eligible

What is provided

Free self-paced CLEP preparation, with a voucher after qualifying coursework and request approval. The voucher covers the specific earned CLEP exam and, according to the provider, remote proctoring; a test-center charge may need separate payment and reimbursement. The college decides whether any credit is awarded.

A limit to keep in your plan

Modern States does not award/send college credit; College Board reports exam scores and the receiving institution decides credit. Vouchers do not cover credit-transfer or transcript-processing fees, and a course completion alone does not establish degree credit.
As of Oct 16, 2026 · Modern States ↗

Your next decision

For a CLEP route: confirm school acceptance, voucher conditions and the examination process.

Where to start

STEP 1

Choose the result you need

For subject knowledge or a textbook, start with learning materials. For a degree requirement, begin with the receiving school and the exact course or exam. A completion certificate, a credit recommendation and an accepted degree credit answer different questions.

STEP 2

Match the material or the course

For assigned reading, match the title and edition with your instructor. For independent study, read the syllabus and available resources. For transfer, ask which exact requirement the course would meet and obtain the school’s answer before paying.

STEP 3

Check the full next step

Open the reviewed route for access instructions and limitations. Keep any exam attempt, print purchase, paid assignment product and receiving-school charge separate. Use only school-confirmed applicable credit in your degree plan.

Keep proposed study separate from accepted credit

Write down the subject or degree requirement you want to satisfy. For a school requirement, ask the receiving institution to confirm the exact course or exam, applicable requirement and any remaining institutional work. Keep that answer with your cost plan before buying materials or scheduling an exam.

Questions about free learning and college credit

Which route fits learning a subject without needing a credential?

Start with the independent-study and textbook examples, then read the source-backed access and material limits. Use the syllabus or assigned edition to choose a useful resource rather than assuming a free course also meets a degree requirement.

What should I ask the registrar before taking an exam for credit?

Ask about the exact course or exam, accepted score, applicable degree requirement, recommendation dates, transfer timing and any institutional or posting charge. Keep the written answer with your plan; another school’s acceptance is not a decision for yours.

How should I compare a textbook, an exam and an online degree?

Choose the required outcome first. A textbook supplies reading, an exam or course may support a credit decision, and a degree plan includes admission and remaining institution requirements. Compare costs only after confirming which steps your actual plan needs.

Can I put these courses straight into the degree cost planner?

Use the planner after the receiving school confirms which completed credits apply and what work remains. Keep proposed study separate from accepted credit, and include unconfirmed costs as unknown rather than assuming the route makes the degree free.
