Florida College Grants: Bright Futures & FSAG

Florida has separate merit and need-based routes. Start by comparing the actual Bright Futures award level with FSAG Public rather than treating every Florida scholarship as the same “free college” offer. The reviewed initial Bright Futures rules apply to a named graduating class, while the award/renewal rules describe college funding. FSAG Public uses the college’s financial-aid process and is a different application journey.

Florida Academic Scholars (Bright Futures)

Free if eligible

What it covers

For 2026–27, FAS covers 100% of tuition and the listed applicable fees at Florida public institutions; private institutions receive a comparable scheduled amount, not necessarily their full bill.

Who to check first

Be a Florida resident and U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen, as determined by the college. Complete the applicable Florida diploma/equivalent, home-education, GED or qualifying out-of-state-school route.

How to start

Submit the FFAA during the named senior-year window, even if you are still finishing qualification. For a 2027 high-school graduate, the handbook defines graduation as September 1, 2026–August 31, 2027.

Florida Medallion Scholars (Bright Futures)

Low cost

What it covers

For 2026–27, FMS covers 75% of tuition and the listed applicable fees at Florida public institutions. An associate-degree programme at a Florida College System institution receives 100%; private institutions receive a comparable scheduled amount.

Florida Student Assistance Grant — Public

Free if eligible

What it covers

2026–27 FSAG Public is need-based degree funding, with a minimum annual award of $200. The Legislature sets the annual maximum, and the participating college determines your actual amount.

Who to check first

Be a Florida resident and U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen, without a prior bachelor’s degree. Resolve any state/federal aid repayment or default through satisfactory arrangements.

How to start

Complete the correct-year FAFSA early enough to be processed error-free by your college’s deadline; ask the college for its FSAG Public procedure. This source does not direct FSAG applicants to submit the Bright Futures FFAA.

Where to start

STEP 1

Separate academic merit from financial need

Compare FAS and FMS if you are completing secondary school; special merit-recognition and schooling routes can differ from the standard table. For need-based public-college aid, ask about FSAG Public and your FAFSA-based calculation.

STEP 2

Match the form to the award

Bright Futures initial applicants use the FFAA and arrange school/test documentation. FSAG Public applicants need an error-free FAFSA by their institution’s deadline; the Bright Futures form is not a substitute.

STEP 3

Compare the bill after aid and keep renewal distinct

Check your award type, public/private institution and actual fees. FMS has a specific Florida College System associate-degree exception. Ask about books/living expenses, and compare the college renewal rules separately from high-school entry qualification.

Questions before you apply

Does every Bright Futures award pay the same amount?

FAS and FMS have different public-institution percentages, with a specific FMS associate-degree exception at Florida College System institutions. Private-school payments follow their scheduled amounts. Gold Seal tracks are separate and are not represented by the two reviewed academic-award records.

Does an adult returning to college need Bright Futures eligibility to get FSAG?

FSAG Public is a separate need-based undergraduate route with residency, prior-degree, enrollment and FAFSA requirements. Ask the participating public institution to assess you rather than assuming the high-school merit table governs every Florida grant.

Can I reuse an initial Bright Futures deadline for renewal?

Initial FFAA filing is tied to your graduating cohort. College renewal normally uses the automatic academic review and earned-hour requirements. Read the programme’s initial, award and renewal sections for your situation.

Questions about funding in Florida

What should I check before applying for Florida Academic Scholars (Bright Futures)?
This record describes the named academic-merit route, not a need-based grant or a household-income threshold. Academic qualification, residency and enrollment conditions still apply. For the 2027 high-school graduating cohort: FFAA from October 1, 2026 through August 31, 2027. The named applicable-fee schedule is not a promise that books, housing or every college charge is covered.

What should I check before applying for Florida Student Assistance Grant — Public?
The February 10, 2026 OSFA memo sets maximum calculated 2026–27 SAI at 9,984 for Public/Private/Postsecondary FSAG, subject to an update if federal Pell eligibility changes. SAI is not a household-income dollar cap.Your institution sets the FSAG application deadline; the FAFSA must be processed error-free by that date. No statewide year-specific final deadline is established by this factsheet. The $200 annual minimum is not a maximum or a promise of a full tuition bill. Awards vary by academic year and college; do not apply the Private/Postsecondary 12-credit entry minimum to this Public branch.

Local Promise & provider coverage

The records above distinguish Florida resources from national starting points. College-level Promise programs and individual provider openings still need further collection; a national listing does not establish that a local provider is eligible or enrolling.
