College Credit for Less: Transfer & Exam Planning

Start with your intended degree and receiving college. Compare the reviewed Modern States exam-preparation route, Saylor credit-recommendation route and college-course options below. Ask the institution what it will accept before spending time or paying for an exam.

Where to start

STEP 1

Start with the receiving college

Identify the qualification and ask the college how the specific exam or course would apply before paying or studying.

STEP 2

Separate learning from awarded credit

Read whether the route provides preparation, an exam opportunity, a college course or an actual college-awarded credit.

STEP 3

Confirm every remaining fee

Ask about test-center, transcript, evaluation and institutional charges when comparing a proposed saving.

Modern States · Freshman Year for Free

Free if eligible

What the source says it covers

Free self-paced CLEP preparation, with a voucher after qualifying coursework and request approval. The voucher covers the specific earned CLEP exam and, according to the provider, remote proctoring; a test-center charge may need separate payment and reimbursement. The college decides whether any credit is awarded.

An important condition

For a voucher, attempt all Check for Understanding quizzes, earn at least a 75% average quiz score and score at least 75% on the final exam. Check the Grades Progress page for the actual voucher-eligibility average.

Before you commit

Modern States does not award/send college credit; College Board reports exam scores and the receiving institution decides credit. Vouchers do not cover credit-transfer or transcript-processing fees, and a course completion alone does not establish degree credit.

College Credit Plus at Columbus State

Free if eligible

What the source says it covers

Eligible, approved CCP courses can earn high-school and college credit without tuition. Funded hours and course approval must be confirmed; home-school families pay for textbooks, and other course or travel costs can remain.

An important condition

The college describes the route for Ohio residents in grades 7–12. A non-Ohio or international tuition classification may require additional residency documents to decide whether CCP funding can cover the courses.

Before you commit

A course can create a lasting college record. Confirm how it satisfies high-school requirements and the intended degree before enrolling; eligible credit is not a promise that every course fulfills a future major.

California College Promise Grant (CCPG)

Free if eligible

What the source says it covers

Waives enrollment fees for eligible California community-college students; books and other attendance expenses remain.

An important condition

Be a California resident or qualify for the AB 540 nonresident-fee exemption, and satisfy a qualifying financial route.

Before you commit

The fee waiver does not establish an allowance for books, housing or other attendance expenses.

Different steps have different deadlines. For 2026–27 nonpublic/home-school funding, the full-year window was February 1–April 1 at 5 p.m.; the state separately lists September 1–November 1 at 5 p.m. for spring 2027 only, with notification by December 6. Public-school intent is separately listed as April 1; a missed deadline needs school advice. College registration and no-penalty withdrawal dates depend on the course/term. This is not one universal application cutoff.Free if eligible

Questions before you apply

Does completing a free course give me a degree credit?

Confirm the receiving institution’s policy for the specific course or exam and how it applies to the intended qualification.

Can I use the same transfer plan at every college?

Get confirmation from the institution you intend to attend rather than assuming another college’s policy applies.
