What it covers
LDS helps cover eligible tuition and institution-wide mandatory fees after federal/state non-repayable aid for approved career/technical programmes. Community colleges use actual eligible charges; participating private colleges use a prior-year community-college average, not their full private-college price.

Income / financial rules
For 2026–27 the usual SAI ceiling is 30,000. The manual allows a student who received LDS in 2025–26 to continue despite a higher SAI if all other requirements are met. SAI is not household income; no dollar-income cutoff is modeled here.

Who to check first
Meet Iowa residency and general state-aid citizenship/eligible-status and federal-aid conditions, complete the required FAFSA and be admitted to an approved Title IV career/technical programme of at least 15 weeks leading to no more than an associate degree.

Application timing
For 2026–27, the manual requires the FAFSA application receipt date to meet June 30, 2027. Complete it earlier and confirm college admission, programme approval and additional aid steps. This deadline is not a 2027–28 award promise or a guarantee that funds remain available.

Check your eligibility

Some items describe alternative routes rather than requirements for everyone. Use the route that applies to you as a preparation checklist; the program makes the eligibility decision.

How to apply

  1. 1
Choose a participating college and have its advisor confirm the current LDS programme/CIP approval, admission, required courses and your entry group. Iowa community colleges are included; only specified private colleges and approved programmes participate.

  2. 2
Complete the correct-year FAFSA in time for its application receipt date to meet the state cutoff. Apply for all federal/state non-repayable aid each year and finish contributor authorization/verification follow-up; submitting a loan-only parent-refusal FAFSA does not establish LDS eligibility.

  3. 3
Attend orientation and register with an advisor. Complete the academic/career advising and graduation or career plan the programme requires. Confirm at least the required half-time enrollment before aid is certified.

  4. 4
Obtain the college’s written award and remaining-cost statement after other aid is applied. Ask which fees are institution-wide, which are programme-specific or one-time, and what costs remain for books, equipment and living expenses.

  5. 5
Before a withdrawal, gap, transfer or schedule reduction, ask how it affects continuous enrollment/receipt, future eligibility and the remaining lifetime allowance. File FAFSA annually and meet SAP; get the school’s approval for any final-term or exceptional-circumstance rule.

What to watch for

An approved college is not approval of every course or programme. Standalone prerequisites, programme-specific fees and one-time fees are not automatically covered; private-college awards do not rise to the full private tuition bill.
As of Oct 16, 2026 · Iowa Department of Education ↗
Ask the college to confirm the exact minimum award and remaining lifetime usage. The current guide’s full-time minimum table and one worked example differ, and its part-time-award limit and points discussion are not a reliable personal duration calculation. No automatic minimum payment or duration is calculated here.

Awards can change with state funding. If funds are insufficient, the manual prioritizes returning LDS students and then application receipt date. A general eligible-programme listing is not your confirmed award.
