What it covers
A need-based grant for educational expenses, awarded and disbursed through eligible Nebraska institutions. Ask the school for your actual amount within state limits.
Income / financial rules
The rules cap qualifying SAI at 110% of the applicable year’s maximum SAI for a Federal Pell Grant. SAI is not household income, and this guide does not invent a fixed dollar-income cutoff or calculate a current-year award.
Who to check first
Be domiciled in Nebraska and enrolled full or part time as an undergraduate in an eligible programme at an eligible institution.
Application timing
Apply through your school and the award-year FAFSA; ask the college for its own application and priority deadlines. The state landing page does not publish one universal student filing date.

Check your eligibility

Some items describe alternative routes rather than requirements for everyone. Use the route that applies to you as a preparation checklist; the program makes the eligibility decision.

How to apply

  1. 1
Apply to an eligible Nebraska institution and file the FAFSA for the year you will attend.
  2. 2
Ask the school’s financial-aid office for its institutional application, priority date and NOG consideration; some schools require more than the FAFSA.
  3. 3
Review the college’s award and educational-expense restrictions. If you dispute a decision, first use the college’s financial-aid appeal procedure; further written CCPE review has a 21-calendar-day limit from the institutional decision.

What to watch for

The state award cap is based on 50% of the previous completed award year’s UNL full-time resident undergraduate tuition and mandatory fees. It does not promise to pay half of your own current bill.
Eligibility does not guarantee funds. The agency’s December 2025 fact sheet documents eligible students who did not receive NOG because funds were insufficient; its 2024–25 average is historical, not your 2026–27 award.
Awards combined with other resources cannot exceed financial need. If you stop attending, refund/repayment requirements can apply under the school’s policy.
